Wincanton Street Market hits the beach!

A beach on Tenerife

Sunday 17th August brings the next monthly Wincanton Street Market. The theme for August is – “The Beach”. After the great summer we’ve had this one could be interesting. We have it on good authority that visitors to this market should bring a bucket and spade. You can’t build a sand castle without them. You can let your kids build sand castles too.

A wee birdie also whispered that there may even be donkey rides. Another use for the bucket and spade (only kidding… we hope).

But there’s more! There’s something else that goes hand in hand with the hot summer we’ve had this year. That’s right – deliciously cool ICE CREAM!

What’s not to like? This market has all the ingredients to be a great event. The Town Team have worked hard to establish the market, and on-going efforts are geared to make it one of those prominent street markets that attracts visitors from far and wide. Having a theme for each market seems to be a very good idea. So if you have any that would help to keep the market fresh and attractive contact .

For the August market visitors will find a selection of stalls including:

The Unusual Pork Pie Company The Jam Shed
Dragonfly Jewellery Red Chilli Shop
Gould’s Cheddar Forever Fashion
Somerset and Dorset Animal Rescue Chris Lug Roast Potatoes and Olives
Dorset Delight Cakes Pats Brick-a-Brac
Bonzo Bites Taylors Bakers
Christellos Art Forever Aloe
Your Finishing Touch Coffee Stop
Somerset Deli Ralfs Meadows
JJS Nuts

Wandering round a street market is good fun. They tend to be very different from the usual High Street shops. In all markets you will find a great mix of products and businesses. Some stall holders have been selling at street markets for many years. Some are very new to it.

What about you? Do you have a hobby that you enjoy, and wonder if it could become a business? Maybe a market stall at the Wincanton Street Market would be a good trial ground for you. Many hobbies develop into profitable businesses.

Considering the cost of renting a full-time shop or office, the cost of a market stall pitch starts to look pretty appealing. You simply pay for your pitch and turn up on the day with your gazebo, and products. Give your best pitch (excuse the pun) to the market visitors, and by the end of the day you will be able to gauge public response and decide whether to continue attending this and other markets, or go back to just enjoying your hobby.

It’s humbling to remember that all of those massive businesses we see in the media started small. Very small. Our own Rochfords Garden Machinery started with one man in has garden shed in Bruton. Now it’s one of the largest distributors in the UK/Europe. Morrisons started as a small corner shop in Yorkshire. Maybe you have the next major business success story. If you don’t try, you’ll never know.
