Wincanton's first Street Market in 2013 filled the High Street

This coming Sunday, 19th July, between 10.00am and 2.00pm, sees the final Wincanton Sunday Market to be run by Wincanton Town Team.

The Team has decided to attempt to pass on the management to others. Katie Petre-Mears, Town Team co-ordinator explained:

The Town Team was formed to come up with innovative methods for improving the High Street and what it offers, both to local people and the visitor.

The Sunday Market was an idea that we were able to make a reality. However, the original concept of a monthly event with market stalls as the central and continuous feature, with other seasonably themed activities, proved to be difficult to sustain after a promising start and was diverting our attention and energies from the innovation that was the original aim of the Team.

The Town Team does not have sufficient resources of manpower or finance to take the market through its transition in light of recent changes”, said David Norris, treasurer, “but we are keen to see it being developed from its promising start under new management.

One useful legacy of the market is the permission gained to close the High Street to traffic on any Sunday in perpetuity. It is hoped that this could be a useful asset to organisers of future community events.

As a tribute to the inspiration and hard work put into getting the market off the ground by past and present Town Team members, John Holman, himself a Town Team member, has provided this link to a video he produced celebrating the first Wincanton Street Market.
