35 years ago Malcolm McCormack took over Wincanton Post Office, and since that time he has overseen the growth and development of this important community business.

In 1982 Malcolm's son Nigel took over the mantle of Sub Post Master, and since then he and his team have continued the family philosophy of working hard and further developing this strong family business. Nigel has also carved out his own positive legacy, making good use of his passion for cycling and raising money for charity.

In 2013 Nigel was informed that Wincanton Post Office was to be part of the biggest investment programme in the history of the post office. Wincanton was being upgraded from a sub post office to a main post office, involving major changes.

The modernisation of the Post Office is part of a three-year investment programme to upgrade post offices nationwide. About half of the UK post office network will be converted to new-style premises and upgraded as part of the government's commitment to maintaining these vital services within towns and villages.

Extended working hours, from 9.00am to 5.30pm, mean the post office will no longer close over the lunch period and on Saturdays the post office will be open all day, too.

As part of the upgrade the interior has been completely refurbished, giving it a much lighter feel. The old Post Office service counters at the rear have been completely transformed into one open service counter and one security sealed service counter, handling all transactions. A third service counter has been created in the front shop and this can handle transactions up to £1,000. Each counter has a low-level surface, and a hearing loop has been installed for the convenience of customers.

David Warburton with Malcolm McCormackDavid Warburton, Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for Somerton and Frome, cut the ribbon at the official reopening ceremony of the Post Office on Friday 28th February. David commented:

"I'm delighted and honoured to be asked to lead the grand reopening of the Wincanton post office. As well as being a wonderful building and shop, and providing essential services for the town, the post office is the vital heart and hub of Wincanton. It's a hugely important part of life here, and I'm so pleased that it is set now for many decades into the future."
