By John Smith

The Way Back movie posterWFS is delighted to be screening "The Way back" for our March offering. This promises to be a great evening's viewing.

This film is a war drama. Set in 1941, three men reach India from Tibet, having walked 4000 miles after escaping a Siberian gulag. The film tells their story and that of four others who escaped with them and a teenage girl who joins them in flight. The group's natural leader is Janusz, a Pole condemned by accusations secured by torturing his wife; he knows how to live in the wilds. They escape under cover of a snowstorm: a cynical American, a Russian thug, a comic accountant, a pastry chef who draws, a priest, and a Pole with night blindness. They face freezing nights, lack of food and water, mosquitoes, an endless desert, the Himalayas, and moral questions of when to leave someone behind.

So, if you would like an enjoyable evening out come and join us at King Arthur's on Tuesday 20th March. Doors open from 7.00pm for refreshments and chat. The film will start at 7:45 and finishes circa 10.00pm. Everyone is welcome. See our website for prices (www.wincantonfilm.co.uk) or contact us for more information. Non-members welcome. On the door prices are £5 or £4 concession.

This was a powerful film, well acted and visually stunning in its depiction of Siberian forests and snow, the Gobi desert and the Himalayas. It was however troubling because while it purported to be based on the truth - the truth that some prisoners in the Gulag did seek to escape and walk to India - this truth seems highly compromised - see wikipedia - and as a result the whole drama, the individuals and the interaction between them, appears to be entirely fictional. Should this worry me? Somehow it does. At the same time it was also an effective and powerful evocation of history, reminding us of just how vicious and relentlessly evil Stalin's USSR was, something Putin and his boys like to gloss over.

Thanks John. Excellent comments. Maybe not an oscar winning film, but one that stirred the emotions around a bit. Let's have more comments folks so that the committee can get a sense of where to go when choosing future films. Thanks for all your support.
