“The Book Thief” - Wincanton Film Society - Tuesday 19th May

Monday 18 May 2015, 18:54
By John Smith

Wincanton Film Society is screening The Book Thief on Tuesday 19th May at their venue in the King Arthur’s Performance Centre.

The Book Thief movie posterDoors open at 6.45pm – for pre-film refreshments.
Film starts: 7.30pm.

Starring Sophie Nelisse, Geoffrey Rush and Emily Watson, the film is the story of young Liesel Meminger in Second World War Germany. In the midst of family tragedy we witness the gradual transformation of a young life, from being unable to read or write to the point where, with the help of a new young friend, she learns to read, and becomes an obsessive reader of books.

Her obsession is sorely tested when she and her friend Rudy join the Hitler Youth Movement and get involved in the mass burning of books. Liesel doesn’t understand why books should be destroyed and finds the whole thing distressing. So much so that at the end of a book burning session, she stays behind till all have left (she thinks), and rescues a book that didn’t get burned. The story that follows makes compulsive viewing.

Next Month's Film: “The Imitation game”

The final film of the 2014/15 Society season will be “The Imitation Game”, to be screened on Wednesday 17th June. So get that one in your diary.
