By John Baxter

The Wincanton Window web magazine is organising a second Art and Image Competition for the schools of Wincanton. All entries will be shown in a slide show at the Town Hall as part of the Christmas Extravaganza on Friday 10th December at 7pm when prizes will be given for the winners judged by professional photographer Trixie Hiscock and Deputy Town Clerk Muriel Cairns. After that all the entries will be placed on the Wincanton Window for all to see.

The Primary Schools Competition

Water droplets on a spider's webThis is what those who take part have to do:

Make a drawing or painting or take a digital photo inspired by something around you that you think is either weird, wonderful or both.

If you do a drawing or painting you will need to photograph it to enter it as a digital image.

If you take a photo it must not contain the recognisable face of any person under 18.

You may manipulate the image on computer or leave it - as you choose.

The image and any manipulation must be all your own work.

You can only enter one image.

Do not put your name on your picture or image.

Entries will be put in a digital file by your class teacher. If you take your photo at home you should bring the digital image in to school on a memory stick for your teacher to download.

Entries to be in by 30th November.

As last year there will be two valuable prizes of a professional family photo session with one free print and mounted copies of their images presented to the winners.

The Secondary Competition for King Arthur's Students

You are invited to take part. The Wincanton Window web magazine is organising an Image and Words Competition for the students at King Arthurs'. All entries will be shown on line and as a slide show in the Town Hall on the evening of the Christmas Extravaganza 10th December 2010.

Technically what you have to do is use Word to produce an A4 single page on which you import your image and accompanying text.

  1. Produce your image. This can be a drawing, painting, digital photo or combination of these. The image should be inspired by something you think is either weird, wonderful or both.
  2. Provide your image with a caption or headline in a suitable script.
  3. Arrange around your image a story, paragraph or poem to go with it, setting it all out in an arresting way within the one page format.

If you do a drawing or painting you will need to photograph it to import it onto the page as a digital image (JPEG).

If you take a photo you may choose to manipulate it as you wish.

The photo must not contain the recognisable face of any individual under 18.

It must all be your own work, be it the drawing, painting, photography, image manipulation, writing, script choice and layout.

You can only enter one file and you may not put your name on it. You will be assigned a number on entry and names will be kept in the school when the images are passed on to the Wincanton Window for judging and putting on line. All entries will go on line on the Wincanton Window.

During the Christmas Extravaganza on the 10th of December all the images entered will be shown as a slide show in Wincanton Town Hall at 7pm. Winners of the competition in each section (Primary and Secondary) will be announced and prizes awarded for the best two entries in each section after judging by experienced independent judges. (Secondary two £10 prizes plus mounted copies of the entry)
