Balsam House, Wincanton

Music at the Manor is the title of the Pilgrim Singers’ summer concert on Sunday 30th June which is being held in the gardens of Balsam House, Wincanton. If you come you can expect a diverse programme of fine choral singing directed by Jane Fenton.

The Pilgrim Singers is an ecumenical and open choir which has been going in Wincanton for some years and gives two annual charity concerts. One raises money for a local charity like the Growing Space and the Balsam Centre and one supports an overseas charity. This year the summer choice is The Leprosy Mission for this dreadful condition has by no means disappeared.

Built in 1625, Balsam House on Common Road (BA9 9HT) is one of the oldest and grandest houses in Wincanton. Allowed by a developer to fall into disrepair the District Council stepped in to preserve its listed building status and in 2009 Jayne and Angus Hart were able to buy it with the intention of restoring it to its former glory. Since then they have been steadily working on it with Angus learning new skills such as making the leaded lights and doing much of the work himself. The result is spectacular and this concert gives locals a rare chance to see what they have achieved.

The concert is planned to be a real summer celebration of music and the £12 ticket, available from Wincanton Post Office, includes strawberries and cream and a glass of Pimms. The concert begins at 7pm but the gardens will be open from 5pm for those who would like to come early and bring a picnic.
