A map of the procession route of Wincanton Carnival 2016

The 2016 Wincanton Carnival is less than a week away, and everything is gradually falling into place. For the safety of both the spectators and carnival entrants the Carnival committee has announced some typical road closures. Here's a full list, and a map of the procession for anyone who might need to plan ahead.

Caring agencies have been notified. If you have any problems or require further information please call Ann Emery on 07840 116 127.

  1. All roads which lead onto the route; from the Unicorn Pub to Lidl, via Bayford Hill, High Street, South Street (Tout Hill), and Southgate, will be closed at 6.45pm.  Station Road and Church Street will also be closed.
  2. From Stoke Lane to Bayford Lane, beyond the Unicorn Pub, the road will be closed from around 3.00pm, in both directions, but may be delayed until the first float arrives at approximately 4.00pm. This road will be kept open for as long as possible. Those 30 or so residents in that part of Bayford can park their cars in the first field on the left, in Stoke Lane, only a short walk away.  We will try to assist the disabled and those who need carers.
  3. The procession will move forward to its start point, the junction of Common Road, at 6.45pm, after which the top end of Bayford will be opened up to allow traffic out towards Hunters Lodge.
  4. A second line-up will be on Common Road between Balsam Fields and the junction with High Street. The road will be closed between these two points from 4.30pm to allow children home from school.  Residents who live on the Deansley Way estate and lower Common Road will have to access via Moor Lane toward Buckhorn Weston, taking the first left after the football ground onto Common road, or alternatively use Southgate Drive and Mundays Mead.
  5. The houses on the estate at the end of the Wincanton Business Park will also not be able to access Southgate, at Lidl, from 6.45pm and will have to divert around the town to get beyond Bayford to the East, or go via KFC and the A371 to Castle Cary.
  6. Bennetts Field Trading Estate will be closed to all traffic from around 4.00pm, excepting performers and businesses on the estate.
  7. SW Coaches coming in from Bruton will be diverted through Shepton Montague and finishing at Morrisons, from 6.45pm.
  8. SW Coaches coming in via Hunters Lodge will be diverted onto the A303 and finish at Morrisons, from 3.00pm.
  9. Berry’s coach from London due in at 8.20pm will drop off at Morrison’s Car park.

Huge thanks to everyone involved in organising tonight's fantastic and very varied Carnival procession. Best ever crowd thronging the streets of the town including lots of families.
Looking forward to next year's already!
