Switching On the Christmas Tree Lights

Putting the lights up on the Wincanton Market Place Christmas tree

Some of you may have noticed that a Christmas tree has appeared in Market Place this week, and since its arrival it has been decorated with coloured lights.

Well, as is customary, your Town Council has provided this, although this year a little earlier than in previous years. Last year several residents asked if the tree could arrive earlier in future and the Town Council decided to act upon that request.

In addition, the Town Council will be illuminating the tree in Carrington Way and putting up large white snowflakes around the town (but don’t blame us if this leads to real snow!).

This Saturday, 14th, at 6:30pm the lights will be switched on at a ceremony lead by Mayor Colin Winder. He and the Town Clerk, Sam Atherton will be dressed in their new full civic regalia. This might not be quite as impressive as the switching on of the Blackpool Illuminations or the Oxford Street Christmas lights, but at least it will be happening in your home town and won’t cost you anything to get there.

The Wincanton choir have been approached to see if they will come along and lead carol singing around the tree.

Let’s all get together to count down the switch on and have a good singsong!
