Join us on Saturday 5th July for ‘Sketches of Wartime Wincanton’, a Heritage & Arts Event funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and South Somerset District Council.

From 9.30am you can visit the library where there will be literature on World War One and the history of Wincanton on display. You can view an exhibition of photographs and you can use the computers to discover your own heritage. Were members of your family affected by the First World War? Pinpoint their location on our map at the library.

The museum will have a sketchbook dating to the First World War that was made by a nurse who worked at the Red Cross Hospital located at the Church of St. Luke and St. Teresa. It has been restored and rebound for future generations, thanks to the Heritage Lottery Fund, and is an absolute treasure to view.

You can pick up a map of Wincanton and take a historical walk around the town. The map has been designed by the talented illustrator Margaret Irving Miller and it highlights areas of historical interest in Wincanton. These can be picked up from the library and museum on the 5th July.

From 12.30pm, the Balsam Centre will be open to the public for an art exhibition. Wincanton Primary School, King Arthur’s Community School, Wincanton Youth Club, 2nd Wincanton Guides and residents at Carrington House will have contributed to the work on display.

At 1.00pm, gather around Chapel Cross Tearoom Choir for a good sing-a-long with songs from the First World War, perhaps have a cup of tea and cake from the World War One Café run by Tilly Cooper and Hanna Ashleigh and involving baking from Wincanton Primary School.

At 3.00pm, the gardens of the Balsam Centre will be the stage for a drama production from Year 9 students at King Arthur’s Community School, directed by Susan Huggins, Director of the Octagon.

There is so much to discover about Wincanton, the First World War and the work that our community has produced, so let’s celebrate and commemorate our heritage.
