Playdays are back!

Wincanton Playday 2021 posterSouth Somerset District Council ran annual playdays in town parks across the region, including Wincanton's Cale Park, until COVID struck. This year they're back, and Wincanton's has been scheduled to coincide with the Town Council's programme, running from 10am -2pm. As usual there will be an impressive array of children's activities to keep everyone engaged and entertained.

Bug Fest Bike Juicer Punch & Judy
Bouncy castle Birds of prey Obstacle course
Hover boards Digital games Storyteller
Ball games Dance workshop Pot Doodle

* Similar events will be happening in Yeovil and Chard, so activities may vary at each location.

Community stalls

For the duration of the event, various community groups and charities will be representing themselves with information stalls. It'll be a good opportunity to make contact with them, and to find out what they do and how you can get involved.

Community Awards

Wincanton Town Council presents an annual Community Award to individuals and groups in recognition of their contribution to the Wincanton community. The award ceremony has traditionally taken place in the Town Hall after the switching on of the Market Place Christmas lights, but of course last year there were no such gatherings. It was decided instead to incorporate the ceremony into this event, which will mean a great deal more people will have the opportunity to join in the celebration of some of our local heroes. The awards ceremony will take place at 11am.

Skatepark Jam

As a belated celebration of the grand re-opening of Wincanton's brand new skate park, a Skatepark Jam has been organised to coincide with Crowd at the Cale, starting at 1pm.

Wincanton's original skate park was opened in 2004. After 15 years, a group of local skaters approached the Town Council to report that wear and tear had rendered the facility unfit for purpose, and so it was decided that money would be raised to have the park completely replaced.

Construction of the brand new skate park began in February 2020, and it was opened to the public just in time for COVID. The park builder, Maverick Industries, promised the Town Council a properly organised Skatepark Jam event to celebrate the grand re-opening of the new facility, but kindly agreed to postpone the event until pandemic restrictions had been lifted.

To get an idea of what to expect, check out this video of one held on the old facility back in 2015.

Wincanton Silver Band

Starting at 2pm, Wincanton Silver Band will be playing for the first time in Wincanton since 2019, excluding their online lockdown recordings and a small group that played at a closed ceremony for the switching on of the Market Place lights last Christmas.
