Will and Amy Cutts, owners of The Nog Inn, WincantonThe year 2011 has, without doubt, been a success for one of Wincanton's best-loved pubs, The Nog Inn. Earlier this year the Nog, owned and managed by Will and Amy Cutts, won the coveted CAMRA Heart of Wessex Pub of the Year award. Now, to their surprise and delight, they have won through the next round to become CAMRA's Wessex Regional Pub of the year 2011.

"We couldn't be more amazed", said Will. "We had no idea we were in the running. Apparently we were "mystery visited" by three independent judges and they thought The Nog deserved it - who are we to argue!"

The Nog has beaten off competition from Dorset, Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, the Channel Islands and parts of Somerset and Wiltshire and now goes on to CAMRA's National Pub of the Year competition, a top accolade for which 16 other regional winners will be contending.

One judge reported: "The Nog Inn is a very welcoming pub with slick service. Otter Beer was in top form, as was Plains Innocence. A pleasant beer garden is at the end of a cobbled path. The barman was friendly and knowledgeable."

Another judge said, "Four beers in very good condition, plus guest ciders and draught foreign beers."

And the third was impressed by what he called "a pleasant, unspoilt town pub".

A proper log burnerThe Nog's passion for real ale will be much in evidence during National Cask Ale Week (1st to 9th October). Will and Amy will have no less than six regional ales for you to try, rounding the week off with a BBQ in the garden and live music from Full Tilt on Saturday 8th October.

Real ales are not the only draw to this friendly and cosy family pub. The food is very popular, especially the Sunday Carvery, and bookings are now being taken for Christmas. A log burner, free wi-fi and a much-competed-for comfy sofa welcome The Nog Inn's customers (and their well-behaved dogs!).

A date is yet to be set for Will and Amy to receive their latest award, but details of the event will be available from their website when known.
