Roof Aid logoWhen the Quinquennial Report for our church was undertaken in 2009 it identified many areas that needed remedial work. Some were of an urgent nature and costly, some not so urgent and less costly.

This resulted in part of the church roof, the nave, being identified as in need of urgent repair. To many this came as a total surprise and shock, especially as part of the roof had been repaired only a few years ago. However this repair was on the southern side of the church, whereas the current need is on the northern side.

The Parish Church of St Peter and St Paul, WincantonSo we now enter phase two, with the need to raise sufficient funds which will enable the repair to be successfully undertaken. The overall projected cost of the project is £243,000. This substantial sum will need to be met through seeking grant-funding, donations and fundraising.

In March 2011 the initiative to form a fundraising committee was taken. This small group of volunteers meets regularly to exchange ideas, monitor progress and promote forthcoming events. It also enjoys the support of others when need is identified. After its formation the committee felt it would be good to adopt a logo which would help illustrate the plight of our church roof and at the same time identify each fundraising project and its cause. Hence Roof Aid was born.

Although progress is well underway, the financial sum that has to be raised by the committee and its supporters is substantial, £75,000 before the end of 2012. Throughout the forthcoming months many events are being organised and will be advertised nearer the time.

A black and white drawing of the Parish Church of St Peter and St Paul, WincantonWe seek the support of our community to enable this project to be fulfilled, which will see our church preserved for future generations. I am sure as well as the regular congregation the whole community will wish to see a successful conclusion.

Equally, many people look to the church at the time of need, whether it is for marriages, christenings or for the sad occasion of a funeral. It is therefore vital we maintain and preserve it to meet the needs of everyone.
