David Warburton Welcomes £92,600 Grant to a Wincanton Church

David Warburton, Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for Frome has welcomed the announcement of a £92,600 government repair grant to the church of St. Luke and St. Teresa in Wincanton.

St. Luke and St. Teresa’s is one of the 502 churches across the UK which will receive a share of the Listed Places of Worship Roof Repair Fund, to restore their roofs, gutters and stonework. This £55 million fund was announced in Budget 2015. A £30m fund is being made available now and will be followed by a second round worth £25m. Applications for the second round of funding will open later in the year.

“I’m delighted that St. Luke and St. Teresa’s has received this vital funding for these essential repairs. The church dates back to 1881 and is a stunning example of 19th century architecture in Wincanton. Our historic places of worship must be preserved, and this money will help ensure the church and presbytery remain in good repair for future generations.”

I am sure that this decision by the Coalition Government is one which all the other Parliamentary candidates would agree with, as would many local people like myself who live in the town.

I certainly concur with the previous comment, all to often we see Churches fall into a bad state and even some converted into another religion other than Christian. Knowing Alan Dimmick the UKIP P.P.C I'm sure he would agree with the Grant too.

What a strange headline. I think you'd find it hard to find anyone who would be disappointed by the news of this grant. Perhaps the headline should be "The People of Wincanton Welcome . . . ". Wouldn't that be a bit more in line with WW's non politically aligned policy?

I can't say I particularly disagree. I suppose the implication is that Mr. Warburton was in some was involved with securing of the grant, but that isn't claimed in the article, so perhaps not.

In any case it seems unlikely anyone else was going to write about it, local or otherwise. So thanks David for that much, at least.

Ultimately this could simply boil down to another politician trying to raise his profile, which is what they seem to need to do to get elected. It's difficult to see how someone can go about that without appearing to be trying to do so. Short of becoming an actual local hero.

Gone are the days, it seems, where someone can stand up to help their community without having a history of already having done so.

I have mixed feelings about all of this, but I can't help but agree that the headline comes across a little self-serving on David's part.

Wow, £96000, what an amazing amount of money. The importance of this building, which you can see from so far away, is a big part of our town for many reasons. There is a real opportunity here for us all to learn from such a great achievement. I'd really like to know more about what I can do to secure such an important amount of funding. Thank you Harriet for the post, can you offer more encouragement and advice on how we can find funding for other important projects within our town?

I am sure if David Warburton is elected as MP for Somerton Frome many of us lowly Councillors will be able to draw his attention to projects worthy of support in our area.
