By Richard D'Arcy

The Wincanton Sports Ground, created in 1993, provides over 40 acres of well-maintained recreational facilities for local outdoor sports teams. Home to Wincanton Town Football Club, Wincanton Youth Football, Wincanton Tennis Club and the Wincanton Bowls club, the site includes Senior and Junior size Football pitches, Rugby Pitch, Floodlit Tennis Courts, Astro 5/7 aside, Petanque Piste (Boules) and a six-lane Bowls rink.

Why not come and try our Petanque Piste on a casual basis or even form a team to undertake friendly or competitive matches - interested? Why not ring us for further information.

A large pavilion with eight team changing rooms, referees changing, toilets and disabled facilities is in the centre of the site. The Maddocks pavilion contains a bar and function room, with a lightly equipped kitchen which can be hired by the clubs for after-sports social occasions and is also available for hire for private functions.

The grounds and pavilion are managed by The Wincanton Sports Ground Management Committee and are funded by the Town Council and user contributions. A Membership club operates across all sports which entitles members to various discounts.

A relatively new addition is Kurling. This can be enjoyed by both able and less able-bodied participants. The group currently meets on Monday afternoons.

The site has 22 allotments which are administered and let by Wincanton Town Council. It is also available to caravan clubs who can use the extensive facilities on offer, including a well equipped social area.

If you would like to know more about the ground, sports clubs and facilities, please take a look at the information on www.wincantonsportsground.co.uk or telephone 01963 31815.

A superb facility, the residents of Wincanton and the surrounding villages can, and should be rightly proud of.
