Wincanton Primary School pupils visit the Town Hall, February 2020

Wincanton Primary School pupils from Earth and Venus classes visited the Town Hall on the 26th February 2020, to hear about the role their Town Council plays for residents and, most importantly, for the children of our town.

The children were welcomed to the Town Hall by some of the members of the Council, including the Mayor, who then brought the role of the elected councillors to life and explained the role they undertake on behalf of the town. The children asked questions about the role of the Mayor, as well as the mayoral gown and chains. Most excitingly the children called the room to order by hitting the gavel and saying loudly – “order!”

One of the interesting items in the town hall is a ships bell, from a ship called the Fowey. The children heard the story of how the bell was used in fog so the ship didn’t run aground or into other ships at sea, and why it was donated to the town.

Finally, the children contributed to the community engagement the Town Council has undertaken since July 2019 and again in January 2020. The results were requests for a zoo, soft play, a flower garden, a gym in the park, a cinema, a beach and snow!

It was an exciting visit for everyone involved. The Mayor spoke of the importance of including the voice of the children in our Wincanton for the Future plan. The town councillors and staff look forward to the next visit.
