Youngsters to Receive a Mug for the Diamond Jubilee

Special celebration mugs will be handed out free to school children from Wincanton this summer to mark the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. A Town Council jubilee committee was set up earlier this year to decide how to commemorate the event.

Wincanton town councillors have questioned a South Somerset District Council retail study carried out without their knowledge. A study by property consultants GVA Grimley reported that although there was no immediate need for retail development in the town, it identified the Carrington Way and Memorial Hall car parks as possible sites.

Wincanton town council has strongly opposed plans for 350 additional homes earmarked for the town by South Somerset District Council. Town councillors say they are unable to assess the impact the extra housing would have on the infrastructure of the town due to ongoing expansion. The town is already committed to 703 extra houses over the next few years, some of which are already built.
