The line-up at the civic service
Wincanton Town Council Civic Service Sunday 6th March.

Richard D'Arcy, Mayor of WincantonIt was a very successful occasion and many people have expressed their compliments. During the service a collection was made for the Friends of Wincanton Community Hospital. This raised a total of £384.

What follows is my welcome address.

I extend a warm welcome to distinguished guests representing the Lord Lieutenant of Somerset, Civic Leaders, representatives of Organisations and Services within our community, fellow Town Councillors, Parishioners, family members and friends, to this the first Civic Service to be hosted by our Town Council.

For many years I have felt we at Wincanton should hold such a service, as I have had the privilege and honour of attending many with my wife during this, and my previous term of office.

After much thought and consideration I felt it would be appropriate to try and arrange a service towards the end of my term of office. I felt a theme entitled A Civic Service of Thanksgiving, would be appropriate.

Despite the difficult period many are currently experiencing, I believe we have many things we take for granted, yet need to be thankful and mindful of within our own community.

Facilities such as Schools, Leisure Centre, Outdoor Sports, Business Park, Retail Outlets, Housing, Clubs and Organisations, to name a few.

Of course I must not forget health care, our new Health Centre, currently under construction and our Hospital, a facility which many hope they never have to use, yet has been a valuable asset to us for many years.

Many aspects of our society depend upon volunteers to be able to function and survive. They also depend upon fundraising, which brings me to my chosen charity The Friends of Wincanton Community Hospital. This voluntary supportive group has raised many thousands of pounds for the benefit of others, in support of our hospital.

During the service you will hear more about the role this group plays and the benefits it brings to our hospital and its surrounding community.

Finally I thank you all for supporting me on this occasion, for the support I have received throughout my term of office in representing the people of Wincanton and the support of my family.

Richard D'Arcy, Mayor

After the service everyone was invited to meet together for tea at the David Sharp Centre.
