Poo-picking, tack-cleaning and strimming were the order of the day on Tuesday 25th June for a team from Wincanton Racecourse who spent the day at the Blackmore Vale RDA as part of their community engagement day.

Eight employees from the Racecourse took a day off from their usual duties and were put to work on a number of tasks including washing down walls and weeding the school.

The RDA group is based at the home of Mark and Tessa Woodhouse in North Cheriton and a cuddle with their top racehorse Present Man was also on the agenda. The gelding has won the last two renewals of the Racecourse’s historic Badger Chase and in November will be attempting a record-breaking third win.

“It was a great day which we all enjoyed and we learnt a lot about the RDA. Present Man and his field mate Peak to Peak watched over us making sure we did all our jobs properly!”

Blackmore Vale Riding for the Disabled Association

The Blackmore Vale RDA, a branch of the Riding for the Disabled Association, offers riding on real ponies and two mechanical horses in North Cheriton, Somerset, to physically and/or mentally impaired people of all ages in the North Dorset and South Somerset region. Riders range in age from 5-74 years and have a variety of disabilities.

The group, an independent charity responsible for all their own fundraising and offering their services to participants completely free of charge, has eight accredited coachs and a pool of 50 volunteers to help them. They operate on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays during term time.

You can find the group on the national RDA website, and donate on their JustGiving page. Get in touch with them on 07377 395676 or email .
