Students running with the torchOn Friday 15th June students from schools in Wincanton, Castle Cary, Ansford, and Bruton brought pure cheer and delight to crowds as they carried out their own version of the Olympic Torch Relay through their towns.

The schools involved were Castle Cary Primary School, Ansford Academy, Bruton School for Girls, Bruton Primary School, Sexey's School, King Arthur's School, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Primary School and Wincanton Primary School. Ten students from each school were selected to run in the event and they were accompanied by Wincanton resident Steve Lafferty, who ran a leg of the official Olympic Torch Relay on 22nd May and proudly carried his own Torch as a memento of that day.

Crowds cheering the runnersThe sun shone, the breeze was stiff, but still people gathered at each of the stopping points along the route, proud parents, friends, well-wishers and interested bystanders, to cheer the arrival of students carrying the torch. It looked like the real deal, and the children were having a great time. It was worth the wait to see those students with beaming smiles from ear to ear.

The students were also accompanied by a team of adults and police to ensure their safety along the way.

The event was organised by local schools, backed by businesses, sport centres, the town councils and the police. I say that they deserve great praise; events like this are hard to organise and run but they can sit back and be proud of what they have achieved.

This clearly wasn't the real national event, but they did us all proud and warmed many hearts in Wincanton today.
