Jack and the Beanstalk at Wincanton Library

Wincanton is extremely lucky to have such a fantastic Library that continues to prove its worth despite the modern trends of the digital age. These are some of the events and activities that have been going on over the last couple of months, and some that are coming up soon. Keep an eye on the Calendar for updates.

Over the Easter holiday

We had a fabulous fortnight in the Library over the Easter holiday with something for the children going on every day. There were Lego drop-in sessions and Rhyme Times, and the highlight of the first week was a visit from the children’s author Beth Webb. Many thanks to Georgina, who runs the monthly Chatterbooks children’s book group for organising this. Beth, the author of the Fleabag books among others, spent the morning telling brilliant stories to the children, and the afternoon doing writing workshops, both of which were thoroughly enjoyed by everyone.

The highlight of the second week was our Jack and the Beanstalk craft and story session, thanks to the Wincanton Library Friends. Some of the children had planted beans at our Get ready for Spring session during the February half-term week and we were able to see how much they had grown. Inge then helped the children make a giant beanstalk and a pair of giant boots to put on our display board, as well as rabbit, lamb and chick masks. Eileen did a wonderful reading of the story and Jane organised a treasure hunt in which the children had to hunt for golden eggs. It was a jam-packed morning and the children went home wearing their masks and clutching eggs and balloons.

Library Friends Spring Fair

Wincanton Library was buzzing on Saturday 11th May when the Library Friends held their Spring Fair. The weather was fine enough for the well-stocked bookstall to be placed outside in the sunshine for people to browse the adults’ and children’s books that were available for sale. Inside the Library was a raffle with an assortment of prizes, an opportunity to meet the ever popular Chloe, the PAT dog, a refreshment stall with some exceedingly good cakes and crafts to keep the children entertained making caterpillars for the spring to herald the butterflies to come.

Although the date conflicted with several other local events, there were still nearly 200 people visiting the library over the two hours which compares well with the typical Saturday attendance of about 80, and over £100 was raised which the Friends hope will go some way towards paying for the redecoration of the staff room, and mounting some more of the bookshelves on wheels so that the library space can be more versatile.

Rumble in the Jungle at Wincanton Library

Coming up in May and June

The next special event in the Library is Rumble in the Jungle on Wednesday 29th May, the middle of half-term week, at 10:30am. For 3-7 year-olds, there will be a story teller, and we hope to be making lion masks, doing a jungle dance and possibly going on a lion hunt!

As always with children’s events in the Library, attendance is free but due to limited space please contact the library to reserve your place (01963 32173, ). As these events are always oversubscribed, please also let the library know if you have reserved a place but are unable to attend. There will be somebody else who will be very grateful to learn that there is space for their child after all.

June 10th – 15th is Empathy Week and the Library will be taking part. Why not drop in and find out what’s happening? Remember, our local library is here to serve us, but if we don’t use it, the funding authority may one day decide that we no longer want it and move library facilities to a larger town.

All the regular events at the Library will continue into June and you'll find them all listed on the Calendar, each with the prefix "[LIBRARY:]" for clarity.
