The Art of Medicine – A History Society Talk by Hendrika Foster

Friday 24 October 2014, 08:19
By John Baxter

Pompei medicineHendrika Foster can be depended upon to provide The Wincanton Museum & History Society with an unusual and thought-provoking lecture, together with striking images.

This time her subject is “The Art of Medicine” and she goes back to the Greek physician Hippolytus, who introduced the systematic classification of medicine and his famous oath to do no harm in 460 BCE. Medicine was then thought of as an art until the Renaissance. Our illustration comes from Pompeii and shows a Roman surgeon dealing with a wounded soldier.

The talk takes places on Friday 31st October. Starting at 7.30pm in the Memorial Hall, it is followed by refreshments. The cost is £2 for members and £5 for visitors. Museum and History Society talks are always enjoyable, interesting and friendly occasions. Come and join us.
