Modern languages cross curricular day at King Arthur's

In the libraryThe 6th and 7th May this year saw Yr5 students from the primary schools in and surrounding Wincanton being invited to King Arthur's Community School to celebrate their language learning. Our aim was to promote intercultural understanding and strengthen the link between primary schools and King Arthur's.

Food mixingDuring the day, the pupils were able to explore aspects of French culture, through food and sport. This was done through learning the basics of Handball which is very popular in France. They also baked muffins and made and decorated cake boxes. Their boxes had to reflect what they knew about France and the French language.

Throughout the day the Yr 5 pupils were supported by a group of Yr8 KA students who were there to help and lead some of the activities. This gave some Yr8 students the opportunity to take on responsibilities and have a taste of being a leader. They were very positive about the experience and were great ambassadors for King Arthur's.

French basketball?Ms Sheila Kitts, the languages teachers from Our Lady's Primary School in Wincanton said: "The children thoroughly enjoyed all the activities. Everyone worked very hard to make it such a success, staff and students. The Y8 helpers were especially effective and showed patience and kindness to all their visitors. It was a really fun way to celebrate their initial language learning and a very positive experience overall".

We felt the event was a great success. A lot of hard work went into this project and we would like to repeat it again. We hope it will give pupils more understanding of other cultures and motivate them to make the most of their language lessons.

One to show the kids...
