Royal British Legion display poppies tied to posts throughout Wincanton

The 2015 National Poppy Appeal started on Thursday 22nd October and Wincanton is in full gear to make it a special year. Wincanton Town Council has started things rolling with the Royal British Legion display poppies on lamp posts and signs on the approaches to town and in the High Street, and the town’s businesses and shops have been very supportive in agreeing to sell poppies.

There will be a major effort to increase Wincanton’s astounding Poppy Appeal total of £16,785 last year, with poppies being sold in the major supermarkets, businesses and shops.

As part of the Poppy Appeal this year Tony Goddard, Wincanton RBL chairman has written a book of tribute to the War Dead of Wincanton of the First World War entitled “More Than Just Names” which will be available at several locations within Wincanton. It is hoped it will be launched on Saturday 31st October in Papertrees shop in Wincanton High Street, priced £7.95.

Tony will be there to sign the books and discuss how his research ended with the publishing of the book. The book took seven years to research and has revealed some astounding stories, never before revealed. It tells of all those who lost their lives from Wincanton and who are remembered on the Roll of Honour of the First World War in Wincanton Parish Church.

All the profits from the book will go directly to Wincanton Poppy Appeal 2015/16. Local sponsors have enabled the book to be produced and Wincanton Print Ltd are printing it, making it a truly Wincanton-produced project.

To coincide with Poppy Appeal Wincanton Royal British Legion are holding a free evening of live music by the music group “Tattie Boogle”, who will feature songs from the 60s, together with folk music and other nostalgic songs. There will be free buffet refreshments and an evening of fun at the Unicorn Inn, Bayford as an introduction to Poppy Appeal 2015. The evening starts at 7.30 pm on 28th October. All are welcome – it is not a ‘members only’ event, but a thank you to all in Wincanton for their support.

The poppies on posts and signs in Wincanton look great. That was a great idea Tony. Well done to you and the Town Council. Very kind of Warminster to recognised this too.

The poppies have created a very attractive town feature, and if possible for 2016, should be on all posts in town. It would look amazing to all visitors, whichever direction they come from. It's great for the town and the Legion Appeal.

Many congratulations on the book Tony. A great work and tribute to those people of Wincanton who gave their lives that we can enjoy our freedom today.
