KA Hockey Goes from Strength to Strength

By Matt Elloway

Year 7, lead by Captain Abigail Butt topped their group and beat Sexey's in the semi-final 3-1. The final was a close fought contest between Holyrood and KA. The game could have gone either way, and even with their home astro experience, Holyrood were kept at bay by girl of the match Evelyn Adams in goal. After being 2 goals down the KA girls raised their game and scored to create a nail biting finish. Unfortunately the girls ran out of time, but finished a good 2nd place from 8 teams in the area. The girls look a good prospect for next year with many already now training indoors.

Year 8 Hockey team

Year 8 have not lost a game of hockey since arriving at the school in year 7! They always looked one of the favourites to reach the area finals and did so easily topping their group without conceding a goal! Local rivals Sexey's provided the opposition in the semi final at Chard. KA despatched their opposition with ease, not allowing Sexey's into their half once! KA scored 4 goals, with two coming from Jemma Bridgwood (year 7). Special mention must also go to Rowena Young from year 7 who also assisted the year 8's.

High after brushing aside Sexey's, KA regrouped were raring to go against Gryphon school in the Final.

The girls stuck to plan we had set and attacked with speed and width, whilst defending narrow. The team effort was immense and a real strength of this team. Abigail Butt (year 7) distributed the ball well in midfield and to Alison Jeans and Hannah Paddison who created havoc down the wings. Holly Austin scored a brace to beat Gryphon 2-0 and claim the well deserved South East Somerset Hockey Title. Captain Betony Coleman will be keen that the girls take the opportunity to train indoors over the next few weeks ready for their county Somerset semi-finals coming up!

Finally the year 10 girls also reached their 3rd finals in as many years! Captain Holly Thomas, rounded her troops for a tough game against the private school and eventual winners The Park. However the girls only lost by sudden death golden goal after a 0-0 game in normal time. This team have never played so well with every player giving 110%. Special mention must go to players of the season Holly Thomas, Vicky Gilbert and Poppy Skipper who were the heart beat of the team, providing countless opportunities. Although a disappointing result the girls can hold their heads high as one of the best teams at their age group.

The PE team and I would like to thank those students who have trained this year, and thus had more games. Also we encourage the players to join local clubs to help them progress further.
