Have you Ever Heard of Fives?

Local Historian Roger Ford will be giving an illustrated talk to the Wincanton and District Museum and History Society on Friday 22nd February at 7.30pm in the Balsam Centre, Wincanton.

The title of his talk is The Fives Walls, 1800-1815. If that leaves you baffled you are not alone. His title refers to the game of Fives once very popular in Somerset and played both in - yes in - and against the walls of churches, and then against specially constructed walls which are to be found across the county. It seems the French Napolenic prisoners had a hand in this.
