Counselling at the Balsam Centre

Thursday 1 January 1970, 01:00
By Jane Maklin

A counselling service available for those in need of emotional support in the Wincanton area.

What is counselling? It is normal for us all to have issues and concerns in our daily life. Counselling provides an opportunity to explore those issues that are causing continual unease or distress. These issues may be related to circumstances in your present life or they may have their source in the past.

Counselling is not about giving advice, but it can help clients to explore their concerns, and enable them to consider what has caused their problems in order to move forward and make a change.

To use counselling effectively the client needs to:

  • want to come to counselling
  • be able to reflect on their difficulties
  • attend regular weekly appointments with the counsellor

Confidentiality

The counselling service is confidential within the bounds of UK law. The counsellors are members of the BACP and work to a code of ethics which provides a framework for good practice.

How does it work?

After an initial meeting with the Wellbeing Worker to assess whether counselling is appropriate for you, you will be matched to a counsellor who will telephone you to book your first session.

You will then have an introductory session with the counsellor and if all goes well you can then book further sessions. Counselling at the centre is open ended and initially you will be offered 6 sessions. At this point your progress can be reviewed and further sessions can be arranged. Progress will then be reviewed at 6 to 8 weekly intervals.

The client's commitment?

There is no charge for the counselling service but you are expected to turn up regularly to the appointments.

Each appointment is weekly and lasts for 50 minutes.

The Counsellors

The counsellors are both volunteers in ongoing training. They are members of the BACP which is one of the  main Professional bodies associated with therapeutic counselling. They both primarily take a Person Centred approach together with combining theories and techniques from other models.
