Bruton Road Works – Don’t Be Confused by the Signs in Wincanton!

By John Smith

Silver Street, Wincanton, clearly still open

This morning, 22nd July, visitors approaching the town centre were confronted by signs announcing the closure of “Silver Street”. The closure sign is supplemented by a sign at Market Place saying “Road Ahead Closed”, and one indicating an “Alternative Route to Bruton”. Under normal circumstances the signs would be fine. However Silver Street, Wincanton is not closed.

The signs are actually referring to Somerset Highways road works taking place in nearby Bruton where preparation work will take place in Silver Street, Plox, Godminster Lane, Wellesley Green, and Berkeley Gardens between 22nd And 24th July. After a short weekend gap, 25th to 26th July, the actual resurfacing work takes place between 27th and 29th July.

Visit Roadworks.org and search for Bruton for full road works information.

Just checked with Otter Nurseries and was told that they were not told of the diversion. Their manager rang Highways to complain and was promised that new appropriate signs would be erected.
