What Next? A History of Criminal Identification

Monday 8 November 2010, 14:45
By John Baxter

Dr. Terry Stanford, police officer and researcherOn Friday 12 November 2010 Dr. Terry Stanford will give a presentation entitled, 'The History of Criminal Identification' with a sub-title of 'What Next'.

Drawing on his experience both as a police office and researcher Dr. Stanford will examine the ways in which the identification of criminals has developed over the centuries and show how some methods once hailed as the answer to all the problems turned out to be useful tools rather than a solution. In this way the demise of 'branding', the belief in 'criminal appearances', the introduction of 'Photography, experiments with the French system of 'Anthropometry' and then the use of 'Fingerprints and DNA' will all be assessed. This naturally leads on to more recent discussions on the subject of 'Identity Cards' and 'Biometric Testing' with the really emotive subject of mass record keeping.

The talk will be held at the Balsam Centre starting at 7.30p.m.

Entrance costs £2 which will include refreshments.
