Town Council Candidate - Tim Adams

Thursday 1 January 1970, 01:00
By Tim Adams

Tim Adams, Wincanton Town Council Electoral CandidateA new vacancy has been created by resignation from Wincanton Town Council but unfortunately it was too late to be filled as part of the recent election. There is probably little appetite for a further election (due to recent election, cost, full election in 2011 etc) and it is likely that the vacancy will be filled by co-option.

Following the recent election I have to say that I was pleased to receive 343 votes - considering I was little known in the town before the election. So from a standing start I believe it was a reasonable outcome! It was notable at the count that in terms of votes cast at the ballot box on the day that the outcome was very, very close. However the postal votes were clearly not on my side – but that was more understandable as the majority of those voters probably did not receive my leaflet or attend the hustings. I do not believe that many of those postal voters voted against me – more that I was an unknown.

If co-opted I would of course expect to play a full part in the council and I am sure the crucial choice for the town and council will be to have an energetic and useful new member. I believe I can fulfil that role. If co-opted I would expect to participate in a full election in 2011.

I have provided some additional information so that electors can make their views know to the town councillors or clerk by 31st March.

I am 52 years old and was brought up locally and lived with my parents in Wincanton in the 1970's. I worked in NatWest Wincanton before moving to London and then moved to Blackford (just over 3 miles from Wincanton along the A303) in 1995. I have been an enthusiastic & energetic parish clerk for around 13 years and have been instrumental in the refurbishment of the village hall including fundraising and grants as well as helping win grants for publication of local books. I have taken an interest in local matters, (includes attending meetings and campaigning), e.g. road noise, housing, employment, schools, recreation etc.  I run a small software company locally and have experience of the ups and downs of business. My wife, Alison, is a teaching assistant and we have 2 grown-up children.

I am standing because I have watched with sadness the recent problems that brought about the March 11th election. I have the interest as well as energy & experience in local affairs and business to make a difference. Current issues include the new Medical Centre, need for Recycling Centre, Sustainable Retail heart of town, build the promised Primary School etc and they all need addressing with a proper understanding of local needs as well as District and County policies. Wincanton should continue to be the centre of this part of south east Somerset and has a vital role to play in the context of outlying villages as well as for the inhabitants of the town.

I can offer my experience of local issues, parish affairs and business which can all contribute to the future success of Wincanton as a vibrant market town.

Good quality of life requires that I play my part with the whole council to ensure we do our best – including delivering quality, value for money services, contributing where we can to the success of the town through schools, businesses etc, creating good opportunities for employment, housing, retail, recreation etc., encouraging a positive and flexible attitude to change, preserving and enhancing what is good about the town, with a desire to care for all aspects of the environment, caring for young and old – and everyone between!

I promise to be available to and listen to local people and businesses, to do my best to add to the decision making process and to make decisions in the best interests of the town. Decisions must be made with an understanding of short and long term implications and must be made effectively & with regard to financial cost as well as consultations and processes. We should ensure the precept and cost to the town (of the council and services) is as low as practical balanced with offering the services Wincanton needs.
