Town Council Candidate - Jim Eastaugh

By Jim Eastaugh

Jim Eastaugh, one of six electoral candidates for Wincanton Town CouncilI am very pleased that there is to be an election to fill the five vacant places on the Town Council - the first, I believe, to be the subject of a ballot for thirty years. I was unhappy to see that, unless ten residents of the town called for an election, the vacancies would be filled by co-option; not a satisfactory democratic way to proceed in my view. So, I arranged the necessary letters and signatories to request that an election be held. In order to help to ensure that there were necessary minimum number of candidates I put my name forward and I am now one of the six willing to fill the five vacancies.

I have now been a resident of Wincanton for well over twenty years and have taken a keen interest in and contributed to the debate on major planning issues. I am also well aware of other issues which are of concern to citizens of the town and the surrounding area such as the proposals for the new medical centre, problems for the traders in the town centre, etc. I am fully prepared to do my bit to serve the community and I would like to think that I would bring a common sense and practical approach to the problems which are facing the town. I spent my working life for 38 years in various engineering posts with the Central Electricity Generating Board and have joined in local activities here in Wincanton since my retirement 22 years ago - I am currently the chairman of the Camera Club, I was for many years the chairman of the local Archaeological Society, I was an advocate for Age Concern for several years and looked after Talking Books for the RNIB in this area.

I am sure that it is essential that the Town Council has members of integrity who are prepared to put in the necessary effort to examine all the current issues and make sound recommendations. It is clear that on many local issues the Town Council does not have the power to make the final decisions but their views are nevertheless very important. I should be pleased to help to formulate those views.
