Be on the Alert for Council Tax Telephone Scam

South Somerset residents are being warned of a scam in which they are being told they are eligible for thousands of pounds in benefits or council tax.

South Somerset District Council was contacted by a diligent member of the public, who reported that a man with an Indian accent had called them and claimed that they qualified for £7000 as they have "no outstanding debts".

The caller left a telephone number beginning with 02081, for the customer to call to claim the money and presumably provide bank details or pay a premium rate for the phone call. This is a scam and South Somerset District Council is warning residents to be on their guard.

South Somerset District Council, which collects the annual council tax and pays out benefits is aware of the reports and has issued for following advice for local residents:

  • South Somerset District Council would never proactively ring you for your bank details. If you are asked for your bank details over the phone, please say you will call them back and telephone South Somerset District Council on 01935 462462.
  • If you are not sure whether the call is genuine or not, call South Somerset District Council on 01935 462462. Other telephone numbers given out could be bogus.
  • If you have paid your council tax by Direct Debit, the council will use the bank details already held to carry out any refunds necessary, so does not need to ask for them again.
  • If you have paid by cash or cheque, the council will issue a cheque for any refunds.
