A shout-out to Wincanton Community Hospital, contributed by staff and patients.

Wincanton Community Hospital has remained busy during the lockdown period, although the out-patient unit and wards are closed to visitors.

However, for our patients it has been a quieter time. With the absence of visiting friends and relations, the days can be long and physical contact is missed. On the Hadspen Ward, Skype has been installed so both patients and relatives are able to make a video call. This has been very beneficial and helped families to remain connected with their loved ones.

Activities are being organised to help with boredom and to provide mental stimulation. Who doesn’t love a quiz?

New experiences such as weaving and old favourites like planting have all been part of the activity plan. Patients have enjoyed planting in the Hospital grounds.

During this time, we have celebrated VE Day 75. Many of our patients remember the day and this has sparked conversations about other memories. One patient, who was 13 at the time, recalled being able to stay up till midnight and enjoying a party with his family and friends. We also enjoyed a cream tea and strawberries and watched the footage on the television. It was a great opportunity to remember our patients’ resilience - both during the war years and during this difficult time.

Staff at the Community Hospital continue to be an inspiration. This includes the nursing team, administration and hotel services. They continue to show their professionalism, dedication and compassion to our patients and the Hospital.

My heartfelt thanks to the staff of Wincanton Community Hospital and those who support this key service in our town.

If you would like a shout-out as part of the Mayor’s message, please email .

Sue
