Triathlon Returns to Wincanton - Sunday 28th April

By Steve Elliott

As predicted in the article published here in March 2012, Team GB enjoyed great success in the Triathlon events at London 2012. The brothers Brownlee, relatively unknown before London, became global superstars as they claimed Gold and Bronze in the Men's Triathlon. This has launched Triathlon popularity to new levels.

Wincanton triathletesTriathlon comes to Wincanton for the second year on 28th April 2013. Based at the superb Wincanton Sports Centre, run by Total Buzz Events (organisers of the highly successful Yeovil Half Marathon), the event will be a 400m pool swim, followed by a stunningly scenic bike route of 27km, with a challenging 5km multi-terrain run to finish.

Last year's race attracted a field of 99, from experienced athletes to novices from the local area; horrible weather conditions last year conspired to force abandoning the cycle element on safety grounds. The subsequent Run/Bike (Aquathlon) was very well received by the hardy souls that braved the elements. Race director, Wincanton based Matt Allum, is really upbeat about this year's race, with entry numbers already up on 2012.

So if London 2012 did inspire you to take up a new sporting challenge, maybe a local triathlon is for you. If you are unable to participate as an athlete, volunteers and spectators are also needed to make the event a success.

If you need any advice, the team at Total Buzz Events includes accomplished athletes, coaches, and bike technicians. The event will be supported by Wheels Cycles of Gillingham. They will be providing prizes to overall and age group winners. They are also able to offer advice, and have a large stock of bikes and accessories.
