South Somerset District Council is warning residents to be vigilant following a report of a new council tax scam involving a man demanding cash from a woman at her home in Chard. A man approached an elderly lady at her property, telling her that she was in arrears with her council tax and owed £4,000.

Green-fingered residents thinking of pruning their gardens this year are being reminded that they can have their garden waste collected directly from their kerbside. Over seven thousand residents have signed up with South Somerset District Council to have either a green wheelie bin or green waste sacks picked up every fortnight, saving the need to drive to the recycling centre.

Council Warns of New Scam

South Somerset District Council is warning residents to be wary following a report of a new scam relating to council tax. A Curry Mallet man received a telephone call falsely stating that if he paid £100 to a charity in India then he would receive council tax relief. The elderly man had considered sending a cheque but fortunately realised it was a scam.

Charges could be introduced in free car parks in south Somerset, sparking fears that town centres could suffer. Plans to transfer all parking enforcement powers from the police to the local council have moved one step closer in Somerset. If approved, charges are likely to be brought in at Wincanton and Castle Cary, where drivers have been able to park for free for years.

Be on the Alert for Council Tax Telephone Scam

South Somerset residents are being warned of a scam in which they are being told they are eligible for thousands of pounds in benefits or council tax. A diligent member of the public reported that a man with an Indian accent had called them and claimed that they qualified for £7000 as they have "no outstanding debts".
