Safety mats stolen from the swings in the Cale Park play area

Sometime overnight on Wednesday 2nd December, twelve safety mats were stolen from under the swings in the children’s play area of Cale Park.

The theft was discovered by Council worker Shaun Higgins during the daily inspection of children’s play areas. There is no CCTV coverage of the area, but vehicle tracks were plainly visible from the swing area to the entrance of the park.

Shaun went to the Town Hall and reported the incident, after which he attended Wincanton Police Station to register the theft. The Police provided a ‘crime reference’ for use in any communications, or for any pending insurance claim. At this time the Town Council can't confirm whether an insurance claim would be lodged, or whether replacement will be their responsibility.

The mats are an important feature of the play area, providing a safe environment for children to enjoy using the park play equipment. In the interests of safety the Council has had the swings removed and stored until the missing mats have been recovered or replaced.
