Local Man Arrested After West Hill Drink-Drive Incident
Somerset & Avon Police confirmed that they have arrested and charged a Mr Toby Newton after a traffic incident at 3.20am on Friday 5th June, at the junction of West Hill and Atkins Hill in Wincanton.
Mr Newton lost control of his vehicle whilst turning from West Hill into Atkins Way, opposite King Arthur's School. The car collided with a sign post in the front garden of 86 Atkins Hill, owned by Michael and Ann Boyt. The impact pushed the sign forward violently, embedding it into the ground floor exterior tiled canopy of the house.
The noise of the impact was enough to wake the Boyts and neighbours who came to their assistance. There was a passenger in the vehicle with Mr Newton, but at this time the police don't intend to bring any charges.
The police confirmed that Mr Newton fled the scene of the incident, but was later located, arrested and charged with suspicion of drink-driving, failure to provide a breath specimen and leaving the scene of an accident.
They also confirmed that Mr Newton was additionally charged with “racially aggravated use of threatening, or abusive words/behaviour“ in Yeovil earlier that day.
Mr Newton was bailed to appear at South Somerset Magistrate’s Court on 7th July.
