A Message from the Mayor, Councillor Richard D'Arcy

Thursday 1 January 1970, 01:00
By Richard D'Arcy

Councillor Richard D'ArcyAfter this period of difficulty for Wincanton Town Council, change has resulted in my being elected as Mayor, for a second term. My first term of office was during the years 1996 - 1998.

As Mayor I will endeavour to support all who live here fairly and equally and represent and promote the town as much as possible.

Changes are continually taking place. It is therefore very important that the Town Council plays an active role, expressing its opinion after due consideration and listening to the opinions of others.

I certainly would like to encourage fellow resident parishioners to attend our council meetings and to be prepared to ask questions. To enable this to happen we set aside a period of 20 minutes preceding all our meetings. Of course you may simply prefer to just come and listen to the debate or perhaps offer some words of praise - although this is often rare!

It is equally important for us to be aware of the service provided by our Town Clerk, Mrs Sam Skirton. She is always willing to address concerns, obtain information or answer questions on a daily basis. These are then recorded in a daily log for reference. This eliminates the need to wait for forthcoming meetings.

An issue which is close to many people's hearts is the provision of a Waste Recycling Centre. In my opinion this is something we really need for our town and it has been long awaited. To this end our Town Clerk is actively engaged in pursuing its possibility, something which will receive my total support.
Our nation is committed to meeting environmental targets and this is an example of where fuel consumption, its associated omissions and costs could be reduced, in disposing of our waste.

Currently we have a number of vacancies for those wishing to become a councillor. As a result it is anticipated an election will take place in March. I would encourage as many people to stand for election as possible. Please remember that a ballot can only take place if the number of candidates exceed the number of seats available.

Despite being a voluntary position all councillors strive to represent and do their best for the community. It must be recognised we may not have the answers or power to achieve everything, but we do our best.

Councillor Richard D'Arcy
