Zac Greening - An Artist in Wincanton

By Zac Greening

Zac Greening, an artist in WincantonZac and his partner Clare moved from London in 2007. "We loved that Wincanton was an honest working town. What you saw was what you got. We have since discovered Wincanton to be so much more than that. It is a real hidden jewel with a huge cross section of personalities and type living here. Everybody we meet has been friendly and welcoming. A far cry from London!" Zac and Clare have since increased the population of the town with two little boys, Nate [3] and Isaac [1]. "It is a great place to bring up little ones. The town has all the practical amenities and there is no shortage of childrens groups and activities to partake in."

Zac also says that the area has had a strong influence on his art work. 'I have been totally inspired by my walks around here in particular Penselwood and Stourhead'. He describes his work as wall mounted metallic low relief works and organic sculpture. His art explores our economic and social relationship with the natural environment. "In essence my work is an abstracted self portrait. I am a big environmentalist. I believe that our society has become divorced from nature and that we need to reconnect with it." Wherever possible Zac uses found materials in his work ranging from items retrieved from a skip to leaves found in a wood. 'I hate to see waste. I fuse recycled materials with more off the shelf materials to reflect the symbiotic and more balanced relationship that man needs to have with his natural environment. I wish people could appreciate more where things come from and what has gone into making them. I think if people saw the direct environmental impact of what they consumed they might not feel the need to consume so much of it and at the very least respect what it has taken to get to them. I try to inspire people back to nature!'

'Respect' - Gold Leaf + Mixed Media

Last year Zac started the Windows of Wincanton art exhibition which turned the high street into an art gallery. Collaborating with local businesses and artists Zac placed over seventy art works and exhibited them in all the shop windows. "I wanted to highlight Wincanton's diverse shops and amenities and show off some of the beautiful architecture we have in the town. I also wanted to change some of the pre conceptions that people might have of the town. The show was a great success. We had lots of great press and managed to bring people into the town who do not usually come into it. A common response was 'they had no idea that Wincanton was so diverse'."

'Sunshine on Leaves' - Organic matter + brass

Zac's work can be seen in galleries across the south west. He is currently exhibiting work locally at the Stourhead gallery and the Kings Arms in Charleton Horethorne. Further afield his work can be seen in London, Bath and St. Ives. Alternatively you can go to his website – www.zacgreening.com
