On Saturday 18th November, many Wincanton residents would have been relaxing in comfort and warmth after their evening meal, probably watching Strictly. Just as things were hotting up, everything went black for 738 homes. The darkness was compounded by the darkening winter evenings, transporting many back in time to a dependence on candles.

The view out over the town from West Hill suggested everyone west of North Street and South Street was affected. The blackout began just before 8pm, and lasted until around 10pm when power was finally restored to the majority of homes.

On Tuesday 21st November, SSE issued the following press release.

“On 18 November at 19:48, Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) was alerted to a power cut in the Wincanton area.

“Seven hundred and thirty-eight customers were affected, but were quickly back on supply in stages with the final few remaining customers being reinstated by 22:14.

“Engineers worked to safely restore the supply by replacing a cable box that had caused the fault and no further planned outages in relation to this is expected.

“SSEN would like to apologise to its customers for any inconvenience and thanks them for their patience while engineers worked to restore their power supply.”
