Because of recent resignations Wincanton Town Council is now in the process of searching for two new councillors to fill the vacancies.

Town Council is the first level of local government, responsible for oversight of the town. They represent the people of Wincanton at District and County Council level, especially in terms of development.

The Town Council is the key stakeholder in the creation of the new Neighbourhood Plan that will dictate how the town residents want to see residential and commercial development till 2020. So being a councillor means that you would become part of this important planning and decision-making process.

Caring about Wincanton is the only qualification you need to become a councillor. As the deadline for people to write letters to SSDC calling for a public election has passed, new councillors will be appointed by the co-option process.

This system requires that candidate’s applications are vetted for suitability by the councillors in attendance, followed by a secret ballot. The two successful candidates will be invited to take their seats at Town Council meetings.

To get more information about how you can get involved, and to obtain an application form, contact Town Clerk Sam Atherton in the Town Community Office in Market Place.
