Wincanton Rugby Club Update - October 2009

Wincanton Rugby Club"Great display, shame about the result" best sums up the performance from Sunday's Vase game against Wells' 1st.

We started the game against Wells who play four divisions above us in the Somerset Premier League. We had our usual slow start and by the time we had settled Wells had already scored the opening try, playing with wind behind us, we failed to take advantage of the breeze. This was largely down to the fact that 6 of our first choice backs were out of action so we were forced to play forwards in their places. Things did not improve when centre pairing of Mark Plumridge and Lee Miles (normally hooker) had a nasty clash of heads ending up with a lot of blood and 12 stitches to share between them.

A team reshuffle saw number 8, Greg Palmer, and fellow back row, Carl Ward, moving out to centre for the remainder of the game. The score line of 54-nil to the visitors does not give justice to the spirited display given by the whole Wincanton team who's forwards were outstanding throughout the 80 minutes and without doubt had the upper hand over our higher league opposition.

Bring on North Dorset next week.

Mark Henley.
