By John Smith

Angel Lane, Wincanton

Police are appealing for the public’s help in identifying a man who they believe may have information about an assault in Wincanton on Wednesday 26th November.

The incident happened at around midnight in Angel Lane. The victim was attacked by a man who assaulted him with a knife. He sustained injuries to his leg which required hospital treatment.

The attacker is described as a white male in his early twenties, around 5ft 9ins with a blonde “buzz cut” style haircut and tribal design tattoos on the back and side of his neck. He was wearing a white Adidas ski-type jacket with black piping down the sleeve.

It is thought that he was with a group of three or four other men who were not involved in the attack.

Police would like anyone who recognises the description of the man or has any information about the incident to contact them.

If you can help, report it online quoting reference 123341/14. Alternatively, you can contact CrimeStoppers anonymously on 0800 555111 or call Force number 101, quoting the above reference.

UPDATE 1/12/14: We understand that police have now called off their investigation. They are not seeking anyone in connection with the incident and are not treating it as suspicious. If we learn any further details, we we let you know.

Factual comment: the Police have abandoned this investigation and are no longer treating the incident as suspicious.

Personal speculation: usually when events happen in that sequence, it means that someone was playing silly buggers with a knife and accidentally stabbed one of his own buddies.

So, do we need to be concerned about a serious knife attack ( that didn't even merit headline position) very near to where I live or not (See Heyesey comment)?

You must verify serious news items like this before going public.
In any case if they were fooling around what were they doing with a knife anyway.

Hi Samson - yes, we do need to update this article, but we can only go by what the police tell us. At the time of publishing, they had only told us the details you see here. We are attempting to get an official police update, but in the meantime I will add what little I know from a report in the Western Gazette.

It's not the first time I've come across it - living in a large city like Sheffield, it was relatively common to hear that police were looking for a mysterious assailant who'd stabbed someone, only to later find out that the guy who had reported the incident, turned out to have stabbed himself in the leg while drunk and been too embarassed to tell the hospital how it really happened. I think the Window were right to publish the story, it just needed to be updated when the police announced they no longer believed that an offence had taken place.
