The great Charles Schulz, creator of Peanuts, said: “Christmas is doing a little something extra for someone.” Wincanton Town Council has done a little something extra for the town this year, working with our local company Superplants to give Wincanton the best and most beautifully lit tree for many years (perhaps the best ever).

We don’t always give local authorities their due, but when they get it right we should say, “Thank you” – so big thanks to all on the Town Council and to Superplants.

Wincanton Christmas Tree 2015The 2,000 coloured LED lights were officially switched on at a ceremony in Market Place on Saturday 14th November, turning Market Place into a magnificent multi-coloured focal point.

All costs for the town tree are covered by the Town Council.

In previous years the tree lights were switched on as part of the annual Christmas Extravaganza on the first Friday of December. However, feedback from town residents suggested that the tree should be in position and illuminated much earlier, resulting in a mid-November ceremony.

Despite cold and wet weather a good number turned up to support the event, presided over by Mayor Colin Winder. The Choir Wincanton was on site to lead the audience in popular Christmas songs. A minute’s silence was observed at 6.30pm in support of the people of Paris who were still reeling from the aftermath of a terrible terrorist attack.

The choir entertained the audience until 7.00pm, after which everyone retired to the Council Chambers for the Annual Community Award presentation. The recipient of the award this year was the CATCH group working to keep the River Cale clean and providing a better environment for wildlife in the river and on the river banks.

The Christmas Extravaganza is on Friday 4th December – see you there!
