Poster for Wincanton's VJ Day celebration of 2015Wincanton is planning a whole weekend of different events to mark the 70th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.

The Town Council in conjunction with the Royal British Legion have put together a programme of events, starting on Friday 14th August with a 1940's themed dance with headliners The Forces Sweethearts. This is taking place at Wincanton Memorial Hall and starts at 8.00pm. Ticket price is £10 and there will be a fully licensed bar. Children are also welcome and there is no charge for under 12s. Tickets are available from the Town Hall.

On Saturday 15th August the bells will ring out in the morning to mark being able to ring bells again at the end of the war. This will take place between 10.30am and 11.00am.

On Saturday afternoon there will be a silence at the War Memorial at 2.00pm followed by a short service of thanksgiving around the memorial. This will be followed by cream teas in the Memorial Hall, 2.30pm till 4.30pm. All are welcome to come and take part or contribute to the cream tea. If any of the older members of our community need transport then the Winibus is being laid on free of charge. Contact Andy Chilton on 01963 33864.

Saturday will draw to a close with the lighting of a beacon at Wrixon's field at 9.00pm. There will be guitars and a little singalong too.

On Sunday 16th August there will be a picnic held at the recreation ground (Cale Park) starting at 1.00pm. Anyone can come and we encourage people to bring friends, family, children and dogs. Just £3 per family and all proceeds go towards the Royal British Legion. We are planning on playing picnic bingo and if we have enough people then a family version of rounders afterwards. If the weather is wet then the picnic will move to the David Sharpe Centre.

Any questions, please contact Dawn on 01963 34430. Tickets for the dance are available from the Town Hall.
