The Big Scoop

No Scooperhero on the Wincanton Parish Church grounds?

The Big Scoop, 15th - 21st June, is a national campaign with a local heart. The topic of dog mess is a sensitive one that has already been discussed on the Window over the past year. But with support from local communities throughout the land The Dogs Trust, in association with Keep Britain Tidy, is stepping up a gear and appealing to all dog walkers to become ‘Scooperheroes’. It's a tacky play on words, but the sentiment is good.

In support of this campaign you'll see posters around Wincanton, and the Community Office will be stocked with 1000 bags, available for free to dog walkers who find themselves ill-prepared for dealing with the mess.

The vast majority of dog walkers in our communities are responsible, always walking pooch prepared for the clean-up. Unfortunately the bad press targeting the irresponsible minority casts a shadow over all dog walkers.

So for Wincanton and district it’s important that we support and encourage all dog walkers to take part and support the campaign locally. The biggest challenge, as always, will be to try to make sure that the non-caring minority get the message too. So spread the word to everyone you know who walks a dog, and see if they can all achieve ‘Scooperhero’ status.

Dog poo and rubbish

After our walk this morning, our usual walk had three heaps, one just left on pavement, number two bagged but left on side of path and three left hanging from hedge.
1 bag it up and bin it or take it home
2 don't think the job is done when you bag it and leave on the side of the path or in the hedge,it's not.

Dog Bins for Dog Poo

Great John BUT first make sure the Council provides sufficient bins for us to put the bags in.
They are either damaged and haven't been replaced or just not in the right places at all.

Dog Poo Bins

Hi Samson
Believe it or not, the Council is doing it's best. They have been engaging with the business community for such things as bin sponsorship. It would be a good idea to contact the Council in the Town Hall and let them know where you think bins should be, or to advise them of bins that are broken or that have been removed.

Dog Poo and the responsibilities of
Reply #4 on : Mon June 29, 2015, 16:11:33
Is it not true that dog owners/walkers should be responsible for their own animal,s poo.

I don't expect free bags, council supplied bins, or other to clean up after me. Although it a brilliant service supplied by Bothe the district and local councils and much appreciated.

I treated myself to a 5Ltr waste caddy from the 99p shop some degradable bags to line it and buy nappy bags (300@35p) to put the waste in.
if the bins are full, broken or in the wrong place It goes home with me. double bagged it goes in the household wast bin.

Responsibility for dog poo

Agree wholeheartedly with George. I'm grateful if I'm within reach of a doggie poo bin supplied by the council, but at the end of the day, it's my responsibility to dispose of it, at home if necessary. The council has enough demands on their purse. Nappy sacks are brilliant and cheap! If you can't afford them, or clearing up your dog's mess makes you feel too icky, you really shouldn't own a dog.
