By Hannah Walker

Royal Artillery CrestThe 2014 renewal of the Royal Artillery Gold Cup, usually staged at Sandown Park, will now take place for one year at Wincanton Racecourse on Wednesday 2nd April. The race was abandoned at Sandown Park on Friday 14th February due to water-logging.

The conditions and value of the race (£10,000) remain unaltered at Wincanton, and entries will close on Thursday, 27th March.

The Royal Artillery Gold Cup was first run at Sandown Park in 1878 and has been run there continuously every season since 1921. It is restricted to horses that are owned or have been leased by those who are serving or have served in the Royal Artillery or one of its recognised Establishments or Units.

Andrew Cooper, Head of Racing and Clerk of the Course, Sandown Park, said:

"Sandown Park welcomes the re-scheduling of the 2014 Royal Artillery Gold Cup to Wincanton on 2 April, given that there was no suitable remaining fixture here. This historic race has not been lost since 1952 and all involved have worked hard to ensure a renewal for this year at another of The Jockey Club's racecourses."

Steve Parlett, General Manager, Wincanton Racecourse, said:

"We are delighted to be able to offer the Royal Artillery Gold Cup a home this season. It is a race with a rich tradition and with the large amount of military personnel in the general vicinity Wincanton will provide an excellent temporary home and we look forward to welcoming all the owners, trainers, jockeys and service men and women to the West Country."

Book in advance on 0844 579 3014 or www.wincantonracecourse.co.uk.

Children aged 17 and under race free.

Every year hubby makes the trip to Sandown Park for the annual Royal Artillery gathering at this event, getting home rather late and somewhat the worse for wear after several hours reminiscing with old RA buddies. What a stroke of luck this year to live within earshot of it! Short walk and home in time for tea!
