Deriving idea from either continental and American scholarship, Nehamas penetratingly discusses Nietzsche's sort and his perspectives on fact, wisdom, the desire to strength, morality, and the self. The unifying topic is supplied through significant positive aspects of Nietzsche's paintings: his perspectivism (the view that there are just interpretations) and his "aestheticism" (the tendency to view the realm as a literary textual content and other people, together with himself, as literary characters). it's the illuminating therapy of this latter subject that constitutes the book's leader novelty. yet there are numerous different provocative interpretative claims: for example, the denial that the infamous doctrine of the everlasting recurrence is a cosmological thesis. this can be a terrific ebook; not anyone drawn to Nietzsche probably want to omit it. -- Richard Hogan, Philosophy Dept., Southeastern Massachusetts Univ., N. Dartmouth

Both deductions appear to involve an empirical as well as an a priori claim. But Breazeale’s criticism goes even further. He denies the truth of the empirical premise by pointing to the possibility of a sceptical or ironic attitude, or even one of existential revolt or tragic resignation towards the existence of God, without thereby giving up the striving to determine one’s will freely in accord with the moral law. Breazeale’s point is that this is a question that can be answered only by an appeal to human experience and not by means of a priori philosophical speculation.
