Why should we not say rather that Dummett is casting anti-realism as a form of empirical idealism and, to the extent that he is himself subscribing to anything idealistic, subscribing to that? I am not sure that there is anything sufficiently determinate in Dummett to attract an unqualified application of either label. But I do believe that there are forces at work in the idealism that he is canvassing which make it much more natural to develop that idealism in a transcendental direction than in an empirical direction.
This harks back to ch. 5, §8 and ch. 9, §§7 and 8 of my book. Williams is in fact characterizing a view that he finds in the later Wittgenstein rather than Dummettian anti-realism, but his very next sentence, which is annotated with a reference to Dummett (1978e), suggests that he would view the latter in the same terms. Cf. Kant (1998), A373. , emphasis added). This is loosely related to the anti-relativist point that Dummett makes in Dummett (1991f), p. 135. I say more about this in ch. 10, §4 of my book.
