The PPC processes the input signals and effects control through the output signals, based upon the programming in the PPC. Discrete signals can be both input and output types; such signals are two state, meaning the signal can only be in one of two states at any time.
Using this run status input signal and some timers and counters, the PPC control program can accumulate the runtime of the pump or motor; as long as the run status input is True, then the timer and counter will accumulate the runtime for that pump or motor. Equipment runtime can be accumulated in hours, minutes, and seconds, or in hours and tenths of hours. Water and wastewater systems are programmed to maintain runtimes for all of the pumps in the system. Next, a runtime limit or alarm limit could be programmed such that when the runtime exceeds that limit, an alarm is generated to the user at a workstation; this alarm indicates that the motor has operated for more than the allowed total time.
